Performance Awards

Five Momentum Performance Awards acknowledge both the artistic talents of these musicians and their achievements in the music business. These awards are:

Band Award

Vocalist Award

Instrumentalist Awards (3 awarded)

For all performance awards, nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • They are in the early stage of their career, with a majority of the members having spent less than five years playing paid gigs, or with a majority of the members under the age of 30 years old.
  • They have reached the point where music industry professionals are aware of them, but they have yet to establish a solid reputation among fans.
  • Bands must must have released an EP or full-length project within the eligibility period, and/or within the six months prior to the start of the eligibility period.
  • Vocalists and Instrumentalists must have been active on the bluegrass/acoustic music scene during the eligibility period.

Established artists that have formed new bands are not eligible for Momentum Band of the Year. New bands formed with more than one member of a previous Momentum Award-winning band  are not eligible for Momentum Band of the Year.  Bands that have released three or more full-length projects are not eligible for the Momentum Band of the Year Award.

Industry Awards

Mentor Award

One award is presented each year to a bluegrass professional who has made a significant impact on the lives and careers of newcomers to the bluegrass industry.

Nominees must be bluegrass professionals who have made a significant musical and professional impact on the lives and careers of newcomers to the bluegrass industry.

Momentum Industry Involvement Award

Each year one recipient is awarded who has proven to be a forerunner in a particular field of endeavor, or who has fostered bluegrass music’s image with developments that will broaden the music’s recognition and accessibility.

Nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • Their contributions are unique for the time in which they were made (within the last ten years, with particular attention to the gains they have made within the given eligibility period.)
  • They have made contributions to or have influenced bluegrass music, whether in general or to a specific part of the industry.
  • They embody the spirit of pioneering or opening new possibilities for the music.

Momentum Festival/Event/Venue

This award recognizes one new festival, event, or venue each year for their outstanding accomplishments and service to bluegrass music in the field of event production.

Nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • Festivals and events must not have been existence more than five years.
  • Venues must show acoustic acts on a regular basis, and must not have been existence as an established acoustic music venue more than three years.
  • Events must have taken place during the current IBMA Award eligibility period.
