In his summary of six years of ethnographic field research td “The Portable Community: Mobility and Modernization in Bluegrass Festival Life,” Robert Owen Gardner of the University of Colorado at Boulder examined participants’ involvement in bluegrass music and festival culture in the American West.  “Participants left their community-starved home neighborhoods to cultivate what I refer to as ‘portable communities,’” Gardner says.

The beginning of a new year is a time for reflection—thinking back over the past 12 months and the past in general.

One of the best perks of working for IBMA is getting to pull up a chair in various circles of conversation and listen to members tell stories. I lucked into a recent email exchange between Sab Watanabe Inoue in Japan, Pete Wernick in Colorado, Jerry Shereshewsky in Connecticut, and Dave Freeman in Virginia, on the topic of December 8, 1962—the night Flatt & Scruggs played Carnegie Hall.

Bluegrass Music—your third place?

A couple of weeks ago I was listening to “The Ted Radio Hour” on National Public Radio, and the speaker was talking about the importance of finding “a third place” in our lives.  Home is your first place, she explained. Work is the second. A third place is where you go to hang out with friends and enjoy yourself, a community where you fit in. For some it’s a church group, a civic organization, or maybe a neighborhood pub.

IBMA Announces Nancy Cardwell as New Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the International Bluegrass Music Association is pleased to announce that it has appointed Nancy Cardwell as the organization’s Executive Director.

NANCY CARDWELL NAMED INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF IBMA

The Board of Directors of the International Bluegrass Music Association announced Monday, March 5 that it has appointed Nancy Cardwell as  Interim Executive Director. 

"The search for a permanent Executive Director continues," said Board Chairperson Stan Zdonik. "Given that planning for next year's event is heating up, the Board decided that it was important
to have someone fill that role in the interim. Thus, the Board unanimously appointed Nancy Cardwell to the position of Interim Executive Director until a permanent replacement is found.  We are
