Fresh Sounds

Fresh Sounds: September 2013

Chris Jones & The Night Drivers, Lonely Comes Easy: For a band with its members working in multiple arenas in the bluegrass music industry, it’s amazing to hear an album so well played and produced, simply because they all found the time to write the songs, practice them together, and record such a solid album. Chris Jones (lead vocals, guitar), Ned Luberecki (banjo, vocals), Mark Stoffel (mandolin), and Jon Weisberger (bass, vocals) individually shine.

Al, Alice & Ruth, Let the Mountains Roll: Appalachian-flavored bluegrass trio Al White, Alice McLain White, and Ruth McLain Smith (Al, Alice & Ruth) play through covers and originals, spanning themes from love to loss. Harmonies abound and strong musicianship is felt throughout each song.

Mary Beth Cross, Beyond Good and Evil: Singer-songwriter Mary Beth Cross weaves bluegrass, folk, and Americana on this album, featuring original tunes, an African spiritual, and some covers like The Gershwin’s “Love Is Here to Stay.” Inspired by the spirit and grit of the pioneers, Beyond Good and Evil is a tribute to the melting pot America has become and what we treasure.

Allerton & Alton; Black, White and Bluegrass (Bear Family Records, www.bear-family.de) Al Hawkes and Alton Myers met in 1947 at a record store in Portland, Maine as teenagers. They ended up playing music together on an unlicensed radio station Al built in 1949. Billed as The Cumberland Ridge Runners, they appeared on WLAM in Lewiston, Me., which reached into Canada. This recording is a collection of their 15-minute, live radio shows.
