Irish band I Draw Slow will tour the U.S. in September and October to support the release of their album Redhills on Pinecastle. Singer/songwriter Niall Toner, also a Pinecastle artist, will tour the U.S. this autumn to support his coming release Onwards and Upwards. Both acts will appear at Pinecastle and MME showcases in Nashville during IBMA's World of Bluegrass week. Niall’s CD release party will be held September 25 at Jack’s BBQ in Nashville.

Richard and Geordie from the Appalachian and Bluegrass Music Festival

This year's Appalachian and Bluegrass Music Festival (31 Aug.-2 Sept. 2012) at the Ulster American Folk Park, Omagh, Northern Ireland, includes six acts from North America (including Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper and Don Rigsby & Midnight Call); three from elsewhere in Europe -- the Blue Grass Boogiemen (NL), Covered Grass (D), and Toy Hearts (GB) -- and five bands from Ireland. Italian guitar maestro Beppe Gambetta has booked appearances in Italy, France, and Slovenia, as well as the Beppe Gambetta 20th International Workshop for Acoustic Guitar, one of Europe’s oldest acoustic guitar workshops. #20 will feature American master Steve Kaufman as guest teacher. The Kattinge Gathering, the main event of the year for old-time musicians in Denmark, will be held on 14-16 September 2012.

The summer 2012 issue of the British Bluegrass News from the British Bluegrass Music Association includes heartfelt tributes to Doc Watson and Earl Scruggs, written by Tom Travis, Leon Hunt, Josh Carr and Trevor Hyett.

Bluegrass in the Czech Republic

The 40th Annual Czech Republic Banjo Jamboree in June was a great success. Twenty-seven bands performed, including the Canadian act Oh My Darling and legends Eddie and Martha Adcock with Tom Gray. John Wirtz, chair of the British Bluegrass Music Association, will hand the reins over to John Breese in early September. Breese runs the touring services side of the BBMA and manages the work permit system for many U.S. bands. Thanks to both Johns for all you have done and continue to do for bluegrass music!

The Spinney Brothers from Nova Scotia, Canada are celebrating the success of their latest CD, Memories, released on Mountain Fever Records earlier this year. The CD reached #1 on July’s Bluegrass Music Profiles Top 10 CDs chart and debuted on the Bluegrass Unlimited Top 15 Albums chart at #9.

Candy Floss in Bulgaria

Lilly of the West appeared with Candy Floss at the first bluegrass music festival in Sofia, Bulgaria, last month. Lilly will appear at several Sofia parks this summer, and admission to all is FREE! Start time is 7 p.m.

American Bluegrassers Abroad

Peter Rowan has announced additional dates for his European tour this fall. Check his itinerary at www.peter-rowan.com/calendar.html for solo shows in Ireland and dates in Italy (with Red Wine) and Czech Republic (with Druha Trava).

Old-time band The Dirt Daubers, from Kentucky and Tennessee, toured Europe last month, playing 16 dates in England, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, and Norway, culminating at the Bukta Open Air Festival at Tromsø, Norway.

Over Jordan

Australia bluegrass pioneer Chris Duffy died July 25 in Melbourne, after a battle with cancer. Duffy won the first National Banjo Championship in Australia in 1979, and he will be missed greatly by the international bluegrass community. Our condolences to his friends & family.
